New Orlins, Nawlans or New Oieans but never New Orleens.

It’s known for some pretty diverse things. Bill decided, like many who visit for the first time, to follow our mouths around the town, mostly the French quarter. Because we got back from the boat late we started late. We were surprised by the night life on a tuesday.

Here’s something for you if you want to try it:

1 tbsp olive oil }
1 large onion }
2 medium cloves garlic } Saute until onions are translucent
1 large green bell pepper }
2 celery stalks }
3 tbsp parsley }
4 oz smoked ham }
5 oz chicken } Add and cook for 5-6 minutes
1 tsp cayenne pepper }
1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes } Add with 1.75 cups
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce } water simmer 5 min
3/4 cup brown rice, uncooked } Add, stir, boil, reduce to simmer
} cover 45 minutes
1 1/2 lb medium shrimp } Add cook five min.

Easy!!! Jambalaya!

    I’m really going to miss seeing you every day. In some crazy way, you seemed so close.

    It was a great trip, you and Bill should feel so proud of your accomplishment and the style in which you carried it off.

    Such talented men — I’m happy to know you.

    Love & Kisses

    Congratulations on the completion of your project guys and thanks for the entertainment. Do yourselves a favour though and explore New Orleans outside of the Bourbon Street strip. That is a very bad facade of what the city is about. It’s much deeper and has an enormous amount of mystery to it.

    While you’re still on the subject of food, Willie Mae’s Scotch House, New Orleans, won the James Beard award. Interesting story on NPR about this.

    Here’s what offthebroiler.wordpress.com says about it:

    . . . arguably the fried chicken Mecca of the United States and has huge historical value to the civil rights movement, much like the original Paschal’s in Atlanta.

    It was a huge, Herculean task to bring Willie Mae’s Scotch House back from the dead. The water line from the flooding was several feet high, and the entire restaurant had to be gutted to the studs. A huge volunteer reconstruction project started in January of 2006 funded by over $200,000 in donations solicited by the Southern Foodways Alliance eventually resulted in the re-opening of the restaurant in May of 2007 (A short SFA film directed by filmmaker Joe York, “Saving Willie Mae’s Scotch House” chronicled the project.)

    Upon re-opening of the restaurant, Ms Seaton, age 90, relinquished her place as head cook to her great granddaughter, Kerry Blackmon. However, despite organizational changes, the Fried Chicken is as great as ever.

    …and I’m so sad….Thanks for the journey, guys. I was honored to be allowed to go along.

    You both are just the best! Congratulations on the completion of a great experience which you were kind enough to share with all of us and thank you so much for doing it. I am so happy and so sad to see this journey end. I can’t remember the date of the flight back to SF but I do hope you have the time to enjoy a day or so in Nawlins. I also hope one day I can get there. I applaud you for eating oysters in August seeing as the month does not have an “R” in it because I scoff at that old BS myself and never turn down an oyster.

    dang, just like that.

    well, I guess you don’t need any more “boat” gas, but I pitched in to power the land-yacht up the next leg of the adventure. Burn on!

    As all the others have said and it is unanimously agreed upon that we are all very sad to see this entertaining boat trip come to an end! My brother, Randy, in Ann Arbor, (you know, Hayley’s dad) has said he starts his day off everyday watching you guys! It’s been a thrill and a pleasure every step of the way - we all were so curious what was around the next bend just as you were one step ahead of us in finding out what it was for us! Live it up in New Orleans - you deserve all the bourbon you can drink! Having any problems with sea legs? Bill, your uncle Bob & your Gram LOVE oysters on the 1/2 shell - maybe that’s why you took to them??? Sad to see you guys go - love always, Aunt Cynthia

    I just want you to know that I’m all kinds of proud of you boys. Y’all did good. Real, real good.

    Also, please take a moment to stump for Lauren’s cause(s). She’s a do-gooder like none other that I’ve met. As selfless as a human can possibly be, I think. Help promote her thang.

    Stoked for you guys.

    Cheers,

    BR

    P.S. New Orleans through the mouth is the way to do it, for sure. That’s exactly what I did about a year ago. Man, I loved it. That’s one tasty town.

    “Far out!” That sums it up in all the right ways. Historic stuff guys.

    1min 28seconds into this piece, out of focus, music sounding like it’s a band on the head of a sleeping ant in your ear, drinks go in pie hole, and more food follows. LOVE IT!

    Fear and Loathing in New Orleans.
